Community Workshops on Race, Justice, and Equity

The Village of Bayside Board of Trustees will be hosting a series of workshops on race, justice and equity within the Village this summer. Please join representatives from the Village, your neighbors, and members of the Bayside community to engage in this critical conversation in a socially distanced manner. Village Trustee Darren Fisher will be facilitating a 3-part series of workshops to assist those who want to get involved and take action.

Tuesday, June 23; 6:00 pm; Ellsworth Park Pavilion; Rain location: DPW Facility

  • Photo Op vs The Long Haul. A pragmatic approach to addressing race relations.

Many local community members are asking what they can do to address black American injustice. There are no easy answers, but we must get started somewhere to ultimately move the needle. Participants in the initial session will address the following:

  1. Leverage the power of sacrifice and commitment to make systematic change to black injustice
  2. Learn to listen, empathize and adapt to address race-related issues
  3. Identify pragmatic steps each person can take to help unite against racial inequality

Tuesday, June 30; 6:00 pm; Ellsworth Park Pavilion; Rain location: DPW Facility

  • Guilt vs Intention. Addressing how an intentional approach to black injustice is the way to solve the problem.

When we’re motivated by guilt, we can become enablers or place burden on others. There is a better way. Part two of this three-part series will address the problem with a guilt-based approach to solving racial injustice and how intentionality actually solves the problem long term. Participants in the workshop will address:

  1. Understand the difference between guilt and intentionality
  2. Identify your internal motivation for attending and how to align it for purpose
  3. Identify areas where you may be contributing to racial inequality
  4. Identify pragmatic steps each person can take to help unite against racial inequality

Tuesday, July 7; 6:00 pm; Ellsworth Park Pavilion; Rain location: DPW Facility

  • To-Be-Determined

To participate in these series of community conversations, please sign up through Access Bayside.  For more information or questions, please contact Trustee Darren Fisher. We look forward to your participation. Please plan on bringing a lawn chair as there will be limited, socially distanced, picnic tables available for seating.
